David Copperfield


David David Copperfield terlahir dengan nama asli David Seth Kotkin, pada tanggal 16 September 1956 Di New Jersey. Ibunya adalah pegawai asuransi dan ayahnya adalah seorang pedagang yang memiliki toko pakaian untuk pria. Kecepatannya dalam menyerap pelajaran dan trik sulap yang dia pelajari sendiri, sangat memb a n t u nya dalam membangun karier awalnya. Pada usia 12 tahun, David sudah bisa memulai dan memiliki sendiri show tunggalnya. Nama “David Copperfield” diambilnya dari tokoh fiksi bernama David Copperfield yang muncul dalam novel berjudul sama, David Copperfield karya Charles Dickens.
Saat itu banyak yang mengakui, kalau bocah itu memiliki bakat besar dan permainannya begitu cemerlang, tak kalah dari pesulap yang usianya sudah lebih matang. Empat tahun melakukan show tunggal dan terus melatih kepiawaiannya dalam sulap, bakat dan sepak terjang David menarik Society of American Magician (Masyarakat Pesulap Amerika).Dia lantas ditarik untuk masuk ke dalam lingkaran orang-orang pencinta seni ilusi dan manipulasi itu.
Selain itu, ketika dia berusia 16 tahun, David telah mengajar mata kuliah sulap di New York University. Ini menjadikan dia sebagai orang termuda yang pernah mengajar di universitas. Mengajar dan asyik show tunggal tak membuat David tertarik dengan seni lain. Pria yang memakai nama panggung David Copperfield setelah terinspirasi dari novel klasik karya Charles Dickens yang ditulis pada 1850, itu tertarik saat ditawari tampil dalam drama musikal berjudul The Magic Man.
Saat itu, David berusia 18 tahun. ”Saat ikut serta dalam drama musikal itu, aku harus melakukan pertunjukan sulap dan menyanyi. Makin lama durasi drama itu,makin lama pula aku memainkan sulap dan mereka ingin aku tidak banyak menyanyi.Aku rasa, aku tak berbakat menjadi penyanyi,”kenang David. Ketika show The Magic Man itu selesai, David meneruskan kuliahnya di Fordham University.
Namun, dia menghadapi masalah. Setelah drama musikal itu habis masa tayangnya, dia menganggur. Dia tidak punya uang dan terpaksa mengandalkan kiriman dari ayahnya untuk menyambung hidup. Beruntung,nasib buruknya itu berubah setelah setahun tak punya tujuan hidup yang jelas. ”Ketika show itu selesai, aku terpaksa kelaparan selama setahun di New York. Ayahku mengirimi uang agar aku bisa membayar sewa apartemen. Setiap hari aku duduk di apartemenku, mempelajari dan memperbaiki keterampilan sulapku sembari mencari musik yang tepat untuk pertunjukanku.
Aku mengetuk banyak pintu dan mengirim banyak rekaman video sulapku.Sampai suatu hari, aku ditelepon dan diminta menjadi host acara televisi. Saat itu aku baru berusia 19 tahun. Aku tidak percaya dengan apa yang kudengar itu,”papar David. Showtelevisi pertamanya itu membawa David terbang ke Honolulu, Hawai, saat dia menjadi host acara sulap di Pagoda Hotel. Acara itu sukses dengan konsep penggabungan musik dengan sulap.Musiknya digarap Gershwin.
Sementara di panggung,David terinspirasi dengan duet Gene Kelly dan Fred Astaire. ”Saat itu aku merasa sangat keren. Aku pakai kalung besar,jaket mengkilap,dan potongan rambut yang buruk,” cetus David, tertawa. Show itu ternyata sukses besar. David pun sadar kalau dia harus tetap mempertahankan rating dengan memberikan pertunjukan dan trik spesial kepada penonton dan penggemar setianya. ”Jadi, aku pakai saja jaket mengkilap itu dan mempertahankan potongan rambut
ku yang jelek, lantas aku hilangkan sebuah pesawat terbang,”urainya.

Kehidupan Pribadi

Copperfield pernah bertunangan dengan supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Setelah berhubungan selama 6 tahun, mereka berpisah pada tahun 1999. Ayah Copperfield yang bernama Hyman Kotkin alias Hy meninggal dunia pada bulan Februari 2006 di San Diego, California. Semasa hidupnya, Hy sering menemani anaknya sewaktu melakukan tur keliling dunia. Copperfield memiliki situs web Remember Hy untuk mengenang ayahnya. Pada bulan April 2006, Copperfield dan dua asisten wanitanya menjadi korban perampokan bersenjata di West Palm Beach, Florida. Pada waktu itu, mereka baru saja selesai melakukan pertunjukan ketika dirampok kelompok perampok muda usia. Kedua asistennya menyerahkan semua uang, paspor, dan telepon genggam yang dimiliki. Namun menurut pernyataan yang diberikannya kepada polisi, Copperfield tidak memberikan apa-apa kepada si perampok. Copperfield mengaku dirinya menggunakan kecepatan tangan pesulap untuk menyembunyikan harta bendanya.

Sebagian besar penampilan Copperfield berupa acara spesial televisi dan sebagai bintang tamu dalam acara televisi. Di layar lebar, Copperfield pernah bermain sebagai Ken si pesulap dalam film horor Terror Train produksi tahun 1980. Selain itu, Copperfield pernah tampil sebagai figuran dalam film Prêt-à-Porter (1984), namun namanya tidak dicantumkan dalam daftar pemain. Pada tahun 1982, Copperfield mendirikan yayasan Project Magic

Untuk membantu rehabilitasi pasien yang mengalami lumpuh tangan dengan mengajarkan gerakan sulap sebagai salah satu metode terapi fisik. Metode yang dikembangkannya mendapat akreditasi dari American Occupational Therapy Association, dan digunakan di lebih dari 1.100 rumah sakit di 30 negara di dunia. Pada tahun 1996, Copperfield menulis antologi fiksi berjudul David Copperfield’s Tales of the Impossible yang mengambil latar belakang dunia sulap dan ilusi. Dalam penulisan buku tersebut Copperfield bekerja sama Dean Koontz, Joyce Carol Oates, Ray Bradbury, dan anggota tim yang lain. Pada tahun berikutnya terbit volume kedua, David Copperfield’s Beyond Imagination (1997).

Copperfield memiliki Museum Internasional dan Perpustakaan Seni Sulap di Las Vegas, Nevada. Museum tersebut didirikan sebagai usaha Copperfield untuk melestarikan sejarah seni sulap, dan koleksi perangkat sulap antik, buku, dan benda-benda yang berkaitan dengan seni sulap. Majalah Forbes melaporkan David Copperfield memiliki penghasilan sebesar 57 juta dolar AS pada tahun 2003. Capsule Speaker

USB Hub

Good evening, people. Well , this one is still about USB, though, but hopefully it will still be useful :D

Well then, let's go to the point!

Most computers that you buy today come with one or two USB sockets. With so many USB devices on the market today, you easily run out of sockets very quickly. For example, on the computer that I am typing on right now, I have a USB printer, a USB scanner, a USB Webcam and a USB network connection. My computer has only one USB connector on it, so the obvious question is, "How do you hook up all the devices?"

The easy solution to the problem is to buy an inexpensive USB hub. The USB standard supports up to 127 devices, and USB hubs are a part of the standard.

A hub typically has four new ports, but may have many more. You plug the hub into your computer, and then plug your devices (or other hubs) into the hub. By chaining hubs together, you can build up dozens of available USB ports on a single computer.

Hubs can be powered or unpowered. As you will see on the next page, the USB standard allows for devices to draw their power from their USB connection. Obviously, a high-power device like a printer or scanner will have its own power supply, but low-power devices like mice and digital cameras get their power from the bus in order to simplify them. The power (up to 500 milliamps at 5 volts) comes from the computer. If you have lots of self-powered devices (like printers and scanners), then your hub does not need to be powered -- none of the devices connecting to the hub needs additional power, so the computer can handle it. If you have lots of unpowered devices like mice and cameras, you probably need a powered hub. The hub has its own transformer and it supplies power to the bus so that the devices do not overload the computer's supply.

USB Cables and Connectors

How is it to connect a USB device?
Connecting a USB device to a computer is rather simple -- you find the USB connector on the back of your machine and plug the USB connector into it.

If it is a new device, the operating system auto-detects it and asks for the driver disk. If the device has already been installed, the computer activates it and starts talking to it. USB devices can be connected and disconnected at any time.

Many USB devices come with their own built-in cable, and the cable has an "A" connection on it. If not, then the device has a socket on it that accepts a USB "B" connector.

The USB standard uses "A" and "B" connectors to avoid confusion:

  • "A" connectors head "upstream" toward the computer.
  • "B" connectors head "downstream" and connect to individual devices.

By using different connectors on the upstream and downstream end, it is impossible to ever get confused -- if you connect any USB cable's "B" connector into a device, you know that it will work. Similarly, you can plug any "A" connector into any "A" socket and know that it will work.

Just about any computer that you buy today comes with one or more Universal Serial Bus connectors on the back. These USB connectors let you attach everything from mice to printers to your computer quickly and easily. The operating system supports USB as well, so the installation of the device drivers is quick and easy, too. Compared to other ways of connecting devices to your computer (including parallel ports, serial ports and special cards that you install inside the computer's case), USB devices are incredibly simple!

The goal of USB is to end all of these headaches. The Universal Serial Bus gives you a single, standardized, easy-to-use way to connect up to 127 devices to a computer.
